DEPARTMENT OF Agriculture organised an exhibition in Bhaderwah town of Doda district in Jammu & Kashmir on October 27, under the centrally-sponsored scheme ‘Support to State Extension Programmes for Extension Reforms’ under the Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA) programme.
The allied departments of Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, Sheep Husbandry, Sericulture and Fisheries also participated in the exhibition. Apart from the stalls of each department, the farmers had also put on display their crop samples which were awarded accordingly. Each participating farmer was given a consolation prize. The transport arrangements to and from the venue were made by the department to bring in farmers from distant areas.
The exhibition was inaugurated by the Chief Guest, Robin Singh Mehta, District Development Commissioner, Doda, Yasha Mudgal (IAS), Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Bhaderwah was the Guest of Honour. Both of them keenly visited all the stalls and interacted with the farmers. They also enquired about the facilities provided to the farmers by the department. While addressing the farmers both the guests appealed to them to take initiatives to benefit from the schemes and programmes launched by the government to boost the agriculture production and improve their state’s economy. Cash rewards were also distributed the best three crop samples. Earlier in the event, Yograj Koul, Chief Agriculture Officer, Doda welcomed the guests and gave a detailed overview about the ATMA programme. He said that this is a farmer's programme because they have a decisive role in the planning and implementation of this programme from Block level to the State level. The funds shall flow from top but planning shall be done at the block level with the assistance of the block technology teams, he stated. The ATMA governing board is empowered to approve such plans at the district level with the farmers’ advisory committee and take every strategic decision that is needed for developing location specific crop varieties. Koul said that area-specific research shall be done by scientists to develop such varieties to survive the weather hardships of these areas. He also talked about the Strategic Research Extension Plan (SREP) that has already been approved for Doda district.
