AHF player of the year, 'Sardar Singh is a brilliant and dedicated player': Arjun Halappa
Sardar Singh has been one of the best Indian hockey players for some time in Asia, if not at the world stage. The Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) has also taken note of it. For his outstanding performances, Singh was adjudged the best AHF player of the year in the male category on the weekend.

Arjun Halappa, an Indian hockey player was all praises Singh. “He is a brilliant player and one of the most dedicated Indian players. Even after various championship gets over, he starts his training. Players like him are very rare, who go back home and straightaway practice,” said Halappa.

Indian hockey needs players like Singh, who can play an important role in reviving the game of hockey, which has seen a gradual dip over past many years. “He is setting an example for a number of Indian youngsters. He is someone who leads by example, both on and off the field,” said Halappa. While captaining the Indian team in the 2008 Azlan Shah Cup, he became the youngest Indian captain as well.

Apart from his leadership skills, he is one of the best when it comes to showcasing his skills on the hockey turf as well. “He has got all the skills that are required in the sport – push shot, powers shot etc. He has got a very good game reading sense and runs excellently with the ball as well,” Halappa informed.

It is primarily his skills on the pitch that helped him to establish as one of India's best players and gain the prestigious AHF player of the year award apart from being the most expensive player in the inaugural edition of the Hockey India League. Halappa has had the experience of playing alongside him. “Sardar is even ready to listen to other players,” Halappa said.

So does the player fit into the league of players such as Dhanraj Pillay, Pargat Singh etc, who are considered to be the best players that India has ever produced in the list of Indian hockey legends? Halappa felt it is better that one does not compare these players as they are players from different generations. The game of hockey has also changed over the years. He added, “Sardar Singh is an excellent player. All players have different qualities. There should be no comparison. For instance, in football, you cannot compare Ronaldo with Messi.”

But his credentials as an Indian player have made him one of the most respected players of the current generation. The way he has been encouraging Indian youngsters and giving his best in various matches augur well for the growth of Indian hockey.
