IN AHMEDABAD, the Gujarat Science City is celebrating an extended World Science Day for Peace and Development (WSDPD) from Nov 10 to Nov 14 to link it with Children's Day.
During this period, various talks, shows, workshops, displays, activities and competitions for students, teachers and the general public are being organised. Gujarat Government’s Additional Chief Secretary Ravi Saxena inaugurated the celebration of WSDPD and Children’s Day.The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) established the WSDPD through a proclamation at a general conference in 2001. The day was first celebrated on November 10, 2002 and has been held annually on November 10 since then. Now, WSDPD is a global observance and not a public holiday.
In fact, WSDPD was recommended at the World Conference on Science in Budapest in 1999 recognition was required for the need for a new compact between science and society to which UNESCO responded positively.WSDPD was celebrated worldwide by UNESCO on Nov 10 with the main event in Paris with an aim to draw public attention towards contribution of science in achieving sustainable development and enhancing the prospects for peace.
