Air conditioners - Comfort or Health Hazard?

SUMMERS HAVE arrived and so has our love for the most desired electronic appliance; the AIR CONDITIONER. These days, ACs are found in most homes in urban areas, which otherwise might lack daily amenities.
 
It is due to the scorching summer heat that the greasy feel of humidity and the dryness that summer brings with itself that people have become so dependent on air conditioners. A person’s connection and bond with an AC has become strong and inseparable. The AC is not confined to just the living room and bed room, but now cars, offices, malls, shopping areas, hospitals and hotels have air conditioners as well.
 
Air conditioners have been transformed from being a luxury to a necessity in this fast-paced world. We are so dependent on this appliance that we overlook some of the hidden harmful effects of an AC.

Stepping out of an AC sealed room or a car in extreme hot temperatures can have ill effects. Skin and hair get affected by the prolonged exposure to excessive air conditioning.
 
ACs soaks all the moisture and oil from the skin and hair. This gives a stretchy and dry feel to the skin, which is visible within a few hours of sitting in an AC room or car. After a substantial amount of moisture and water is lost, gaining that back is always a problem. Water is very essential for the skin as it is the element that regulates normal flow of blood in the body. ACs cause loss of water from the skin, which in turn makes the skin prone to wrinkles and creases.
 
Another harmful effect of an AC is when a person is exposed to two extreme temperatures - like stepping out from an AC car to a hot and humid market place. The pollution, humidity and the instant change may cause unthinkable effects to the body.
 
People should take proper care while using an AC. They must understand that ACs must be used in limits, and one must not get into the habit of using an AC throughout the day. Technologies must be used tactfully and smartly, and should not be made a daily routine or mandatory need.
 
Water intake in summers must be increased to minimum of 8-10 liters per day, and if one plans to step out of a blissful AC room, one must switch it off 15 minutes before - to ensure safe and healthy movement of the body a from cold to hot environment. Health should always be given priority, and the thin line between luxury and necessity must be maintained.
