The Airbus A321 hit the Margalla Hills near Daman-e-Koh viewpoint around 10 AM local time. The carshed plane turned into a huge ball of fire as it hit the hills killing all 155.
Airbus A321 was about to land at Islamabad airport when it lost contact with the control tower and later crashed into the hills.
Earlier news report said that five persons miraculously survived the crash but that was denied later by Interior Minister of Pakistan, Mr. Rehman Malik.
It is speculated that the crash was due to bad weather as three days’ continuous rains have resulted in low visibility and foggy weather over the hills which is heavily forested. However, the exact reasons of the crash will be known once the black box and Flight Data Recorder is found.
Some of the city residents who saw the crash said that the aircraft was flying ‘very low’ just before the crash.
"I heard a loud bang and then saw smoke rising over the Margalla Hills," said Aman Ali, a school boy.
Interior Minister Malik said that the aircraft was at 2,600 feet when it was cleared to land. It then ascended to 3,000 feet before disappearing from radar screens, he said.
"We will need to study the black box to ascertain the exact cause of the crash. The (control) tower did not receive any SOS message or report of a technical problem before the crash," Malik said.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani have expressed shock and grief at the crash.
