The Association of Indian Universities has recently appointed Dr MD Tiwari, Director, Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad as its President. Earlier he was servicing as Vice President in the association
DR MD Tiwari, Director, Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad has been elected as the President of Association of Indian Universities for year 2009-10. He is the first vice-chancellor/ Director of the city, who has been elected for this coveted post.
Dr Tiwari took charge from Prof AM Pathan, who resigned from the presidentship of the Association of Indian Universities on March 20, following being appointed as the Vice Chancellor of Karnataka Central University. Dr Tiwari was working as the Vice President of AIU for more than one year.
According to the AIU rules, Dr Tewari will be the interim President of the AIU for the year 2009 and by convention be the full-fledged President for the year 2010.
Elaborating his priorities, Dr Tewari on Monday (March 30) reiterated he would undertake several programmes to improve standards of instruction, examination, research, textbooks, scholarly publications, library organisation and such other programmes as may contribute to the growth and propagation of knowledge among all the universities in the countries.
Helping universities to maintain their autonomous character, facilitating exchange of members of the teaching and research staff, encouraging more national or international conferences, seminars and workshops on higher education would be other priorities, added Dr Tiwari.
“Assisting universities in obtaining recognition for their degrees, diplomas and examinations from other Indian or foreign universities, establishing and maintaining a sports organisation for promoting sports among Member-Universities are the areas to be worked effectively,” he said.
On the issue of pay anomalies of Vice Chancellors, Dr Tiwari said that an AIU delegation had met the Union Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh few days back in New Delhi. The minister has assured the delegation to look into the issue soon.
Several academic bodies and vice chancellors have congratulated Dr Tiwari as the new President of AIU. IIIT-A fraternity has hailed the director’s appointment on AIU President post.
It may be mentioned that Dr Tiwari has played a pioneer role in propagation of information technology in the country, especially in Uttar Pradesh. About two dozen research projects with collaboration of international and national universities are underway at IIIT-A. IIIT-A has become the first university in the country to organising Science Conclave in December 2008 at Allahabad with support of Union HRD and Science – Technology Ministries.
