The apology is first direct message coming from Toyota since the world-wide vehicle recall related to problems with its accelerator pedals and floor mats surfaced affecting over eight million cars.
Toyota President Akio Toyoda said “I'd like to offer a heartfelt apology for causing so much trouble to many of our customers.” He also promised to increase quality control by setting up a committee that he would oversee himself.
The Toyota recall affected 8.1 million vehicles worldwide and would cost the Toyota Motors an estimated $2 billion in repair and lost sales due to a sticking accelerator. Toyota Motors said on Friday, they have not taken any decision about recall of Prius hybrid gasoline electric model because of break problem. Earlier report was coming that Toyota Motor Corp is all set to recall 270,000 Prius hybrids, because of problems with their brakes.
The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said yesterday that after receiving 124 complaints from owners about braking problems, including four accidents, it has opened a "preliminary evaluation" of the 2010 Prius hybrid. Since the launch of Prius in last year May Toyota has sold 311,000 units world-wide. Of the total, it sold 176,000 in Japan and 103,000 in the US.
