It will feature 2,000 fighters from across the country, who would be travelling to Mumbai to take part in the championship, which will be held from from the 22nd to the 25th of October 2009 at Andheri Sports complex, Mumbai. Akki will be backing Shihan Mehul Vora, an instructor with more than 27 years of experience, who will be inviting international coaches and observers to add more substance to the championship.
Akshay has always believed that martial arts is not about violence but that it is a discipline that can change one's life. He said that his father insisted that he learn martial arts when he was nine years old. He even went to Bangkok to become a master and even today he practices daily for a couple of hours. He strongly believes that there is a lot of hidden and budding talent in India which is held back by lack of funds and a platform to rise to the highest level. The Akshay Kumar 1st Invitational Open National Karate Championship would provide them the much needed opportunity to showcase their skills.
The event will promote karate and martial arts in every nook and corner of our country. Vora, who is the the architect of this event, shared this concept with Akshay who immediately jumped on board. He added that the students who would be coming for the championship would not need to worry about the cost implications as Akshay Kumar would bear the costs.
The bouts will be held for all age groups (starting from 6 years) and in all weight categories for men as well as women. Some of the biggest names in Indian karate are also expected to participate in this mega championship. Last but not least, the event will also have a team of world class referees, judges and coaches along with international grandmasters from various countries like Japan, Holland and Italy.
