A major disaster was prevented on Thursday when a gated railway crossing was left open by mistake near Gurgaon railways station.
The incident took place
when in the morning a school van tried to cross the tracks,
completely unaware that the Delhi- Ajmer
Shatabdi Express was
approaching at a high speed.
As reported by TOI, the
alert train driver saw the school van and averted the tragedy by hitting
the emergency brakes. He managed to bring the train to a screeching
halt just a few meters away from the crossing. The van, carrying
around eight children aged between 5 to 8, did not see the train
approaching at a very high speed and just to save some time, tried to
cross the track.
Later in the day, senior
Northern Railway officials went to Gurgaon to investigate the matter.
The manned railway crossing is approximately 2 km away from Gurgaon
The gateman, Vijay Singh,
was found to be guilty, who was later suspended. A case was
registered against him under the Railways Act.
