Aligarh sex-determination racket: Two BJP MLAs play truant with the law in Yogi Land
"The heaviest penalty for declining to rule is to be ruled by someone inferior to yourself." - Plato, The Republic

Success is a heady wine and it goes to prove beyond doubt in the everyday life of Uttar Pradesh. Once you're power drunk you can't make a difference between right and wrong. One day you ignore the Taj Mahal from the tourist manual, detract and denigrate from other coeval portals and another day some historic, touristic and archaeological compulsions force you to retract. You play a palliative of charade and announce that the Taj Mahal 'was built by blood and sweat of Indian labourers.' Please don't make fun of the intelligence of an ordinary Indian.

I'm willing to give discount over this episode as an act of bias - an allergy to the glorious era of Mughal India. However, there is no excuse if you help a doctor to identify the sex of an unborn baby so that it may never see the light of the day - if she were to be a GIRL. All for some worthless pennies at the expense of country's laws, religious edicts, social responsibilities and human behaviour.

And that had exactly happened in so-called Uttam Pradesh - the BJP ruled state of Yogi Adityanath.

According to latest reports, a doctor couple in Aligarh was caught allegedly conducting illegal prenatal sex-determination tests on a pregnant woman who was a decoy planted by the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) cell of the Rajasthan government. The Rajasthan team had caught Dr Jayant Sharma and his wife conducting the sex determination test in their Jeevan Nursing Home on Monday evening. The woman reportedly escaped from the hospital. Local police brought Sharma with the seized ultrasound machine to the police station.

The MLAs, too, reached the police station and along with SP City, City Magistrate and other officials, sat there until 2 am. As a slap on the face of administration, the couple couldn't be taken into custody after alleged "interference" by two local BJP MLAs, Sanjeev Raja and Anil Parashar, late last night.

These MLAs allegedly did not allow Rajasthan officials to seize the ultrasound machine or pick up the accused doctors and left the local Kwarsi police station only when the doctor was let go. Officials, including the Aligarh District Magistrate, kept trying to convince the MLAs to let the Rajasthan team do their job but they did not relent, sources said.

Confirming this, District Magistrate of Aligarh Rishikesh Bhaskar Yashod told The Indian Express: "We apprised senior officers in the government regarding the local public representatives interfering in the legal matter. We tried to convince the MLAs to allow the legal procedure but they refused to listen."

Yashod said that the Rajasthan officials sought help from him and he sent a magistrate-rank officer with them. "They caught the doctor couple doing the test red-handed," he said.

Shri Jayant Sharma denied the allegations and claimed that the team from Rajasthan forcibly entered the hospital and sealed the ultrasound machine and the DVR.

"Nothing illegal happened and public representatives reached after hearing about the matter. I was let go from the police station around 2 am and no action was initiated against me…I am a surgeon and the owner of the hospital while my wife is a gynaecologist."

And this incident reminds me the famous comment of Malcolm X, an African-American human rights activist had made on the day when President John F Kennedy was assassinated. Malcolm X famously said that the assassination was a case of the "chickens coming home to roost."

Well, the chickens are coming home to roost big time with regard to the ongoing political manipulation and abuse of the political power at every level by various political factions within the BJP. The perception takes hold that the people in power will prosecute some and avoid prosecuting others solely on the basis of their political affiliations and connections.

The reality of today's Indian scenario is that pillar institutions are being fatally compromised. On the one hand they proclaim from the house tops about Yogi Adityanath government's scheme to trap doctors involved in sex-determination tests and on the other hand we hear BJP's MLA Sanjeev Raja claiming - "If any body has a government order regarding any such act, he should show it."

God save the Motherland!
