Author of novel Five Point Someone, Chetan Bhagat claimed that 70 per cent of the film was based on his novel but the makers of 3 Idiots claiming the movie is only ‘2%-5% inspired by the book’. Actor Aamir Khan claimed in a press meet in Noida that Abhijat Joshi has written the script and Raju Hirani worked on it.
Raju and Abhijat took the idea from Chetan's book. The starting point is Five Point Someone, but after that the script has entirely changed. The film credits the story to Abhijat Joshi and Hirani. Bhagat's name appears at the film's end.

Producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra and director Raju Hirani superhit movie 3 Idiots has already grossed Rs 175 crore since its release on Christmas in 1,750 theatres across the world. Aamir Khan's this movie makes it the biggest opening for a Hindi film in the past decade.

There is a very big difference between an idea and the outcome. No doubt, "3 idiots" is a very very watchable movie. Personally I liked it a lot. There is in fact lot of differences between a book and a movie. The cam from Bhagat's book. It was a fantastic idea. But to make the movie a success and acceptable needs lot more work to do on the part of the producer and the director rather than just praising the author of the book which gave them the idea.
