Alleged forced conversion in Meerut: Muslim clerics call it unislamic, demand severe punishment for accused
A 20-year-old under graduate student, and a former part-time teacher at a Madrasa in UP's Meerut district was allegedly kidnapped and gang-raped. The girl from Meerut's Sarawa village was then reportedly forced to convert to Islam by a group of young men. She was tortured and sexually assaulted for 11 days.

The victim used to teach English and Hindi at the local Madrassa to support her family. She alleged that 4-5 men kidnapped her on July 30 and took her to a Madrassa in the adjoining town of Hapur. They forcibly converted her to Islam and gave her a Muslim name.

She was then dressed in a veil and then moved to another Madrasa in nearby Muzaffarnagar and was gang-raped there for three days. She also said that, she has met some 20 other women at the Madrasa who were also being held captive, before being sent to Dubai. This incident has sparked fears of communal tension in the area.

On the forced conversion of the girl to Islam we spoke to few Muslim clerics, who expressed teir anger against the reported incident and said that it was an irreversible mistake.

Maulana Yasoob Abbas, Spokesperson for Shia Personal Law Board said, "This is a completely wrong act and Islam is against such acts. This act has no relation with Islam and is a condemnable act by the accused. And such a forced conversion into Islam is not accepted."

Maulana Khalid Rasheed Firangi Mahali, a Sunni religious leader said, "The act of the boys is wrong, and they should be punished for it and at the same time its a wrong way to convert anyone to Isalm. It's clearly written in Islam that forced conversion of anyone is not correct."

However Abdul Hameed Nomania, Secretary of Jammat-e-ulma-e-Hind while commenting on the entire reported incident said that such an incident had never taken place. He blamed it a plot to create communal tension to fulfill vested interests.

Nomani said, "There is nothing like this, it is a plan to create communal tensions in west UP and this is all politics. Suck kind of incident has never taken place. The magistrate has checked and raided the place and nothing was found and locals are also denying the occurrence of any such incident."
