Amarnath, one of the famous pilgrimages of Hindus is located on mount Amarnath in the state of Jammu and Kashmir at an altitude of about 13,000 ft., surrounded by beautiful valleys and mountains.
Inside the main Amarnath cave the image of Shiva, in the form of a Lingam, formed naturally of an ice stalagmite. It is said that the lingam grows and shrinks as per the phases of the moon.
According to Hindu mythology, this is the place where Lord Shiva explained the secret of life and eternity to his wife goddess Parvati. It is also said that a pair of pigeons, listened to the story of Shiva and Parvati, are present before the ice lingam.
The journey of Amarnath yatra begins from two places, Pahalgam and Baltal in Jammu & Kashmir. From Pahalgam to the holy cave the distance is 16 kms, whereas from Baltal to holy cave, the distance is 14 kms. Devotees can cover the distance either by foot or by ponies. Helicopter services are also available for the devotees.
During the journey of Amarnath one should take wind shield jackets, raincoat, hunter shoes, torch, gloves, jacket, woollen socks, full caps - because the climate of that place is unpredictable and changes abruptly from sunny weather to rain and snow.
Sri Amarnath Shrine Board, headed by the Governor of J&K, oversees the yatra arrangements. On the way to Amarnath, camps and food is being arranged by the many trusts and NGOs.
