Amazon's entry to boost consumer confidence in e-commerce sites
Even though e-commerce players like Flipkart, Infibeam and others could feel the heat, but analysts believe the arrival of Amazon, world's largest retailer, in India will give a boost to e-commerce as supplier interest and consumer confidence in online shopping platforms will rise.

Amazon is entering as a marketplace, so the ecosystem of small businesses (or brands) selling online will become stronger,” believes Vijesh Sharma, founder and director of e-commerce firm Donebynone.com.

On Wednesday, 5 June, the US-based Amazon Seller Services Private Limited, an Amazon.com company, announced the launch of Amazon’s marketplace Amazon.in and two new seller programs - ‘Selling on Amazon’ and ‘Fulfillment by Amazon’.

To start with the company is offering books, movies and TV shows’ video products. Amazon.in will introduce additional categories including mobile phones and cameras in the coming weeks.

“Our vision, at Amazon, is to be Earth's most customer centric company; to build a place where people can come to find and discover virtually anything they want to buy online. With Amazon.in, we endeavor to build that same destination in India by giving customers more of what they want – vast selection, low prices, fast and reliable delivery, and a trusted and convenient experience,” said Greg Greeley, Vice President of International Expansion at Amazon.com in a statement.

Sharma says that Amazon is the master of electronics and book sales, with a trusted brand name and probably the best e-commerce processes in the world. They will quickly garner significant market share in these categories.

“Amazon is also the fiercest price warrior amongst ecommerce biggies, with a very deep pocket. Thus Flipkart, Infibeam, and other upcoming large-format electronics-led discount-heavy players will surely feel the heat, but this will speed up the already hastened market consolidation. Amazon is not associated very well with fashion, and thus fashion heavy players (like Myntra or Jabong) have less to worry about in the short run,” Sharma told this citizen journalist .

On the question whether the Indian consumers would be attracted towards Amazon.in because of its foreign origin, Mr. Sharma replies: “The indian consumer is used to low quality customer service, but this bar should get raised now... In all probability, in the coming few quarters, Amazon will be one of the top 3 e-commerce sites in India.”

“Amazon is not just a website; it’s a whole way of doing business. Their mission is ‘to be earth's most customer centric company; to build a place where people can come to find and discover anything they might want to buy online,’ and they have a great track record of executing this. Amazon already has a strong brand recall in Indian e-commerce buyers. Even their comparison engine i.e. Junglee.com is amongst top 100 websites in India in terms of traffic,” he informs.

Amazon.in Book store features over 7 million print books across 200 plus categories including fiction, management, children’s books and academic publications. Customers can expect to find complete collections from several national and international authors like Amish Tripathi, Chetan Bhagat, Ashwin Sanghi, Dan Brown, Jeffrey Archer, J. K Rowling etc.

Likewise, the movies and TV shows store features a collection of over 12,000 titles in English and Hindi across DVD, Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D and Video CD formats. Customers can order from a full range of documentaries, kids’ edutainment, music videos, TV serials, and films across several genres including action, romance, comedy, horror, drama, and musicals.

Amazon.in is also accessible on mobile devices allowing customers to shop anywhere. To mark the launch, Amazon.in has a limited period promotion wherein all customers will enjoy ‘free delivery’ on orders fulfilled by Amazon.

With the introduction of ‘Selling on Amazon’ and ‘Fulfillment by Amazon’ sellers now have access to unlimited and free ‘virtual shelf space’ and a scalable, pay-as-you-go fulfillment and customer service offerings. Both programs have successfully been used by more than two million sellers globally to sell to over 200 million customers worldwide and boost their sales. Listing on Amazon.in by sellers is free.
