WEST BENGAL chief secretary, Amit Kiran Deb visited North Dinajpur’s rural areas on Tuesday (December 2), to check the progress of centrally funded work under the Indira Awas Yojana. Deb said that the progress of the work in the area was not satisfactory and he was not happy with it. He also visited some of the villages in Hemtabad on Monday morning and found that the village panchayats were unable to provide homes to the beneficiaries under this scheme. The chief secretary instructed the district administration to use the fund before March 31, 2009.

His visit to Jatapur, a tribal village near India-Bangladesh border in Hemtabad, was quite satisfactory. There he met the women members of the Agragami Swarna Jayanti Group and the Pragati Swarna Jayanti Group. The members of these groups were engaged in pisciculture, vegetable cultivation and animal husbandry with financial aid from Rashtriya Sam Vikash Yojana, a central government scheme.

The members of the Swarna Jayanti Group put forward their demand asking for a bank, close to their village so that they can keep an account of their finance. Deb promising the people, asked North Dinajpur magistrate, Sukumar Bhattacharjee, to make sure that a bank is set up there for the help of the village people.
