AMU in dilemma after gay professor's suspension
There are some who want strict action against those indulging in gay relationship. While some think the professor should be given a fair chance to present his side of the story
THE PRESTIGIOUS Aligarh Muslim University commonly known as AMU is facing dilemma, after it suspended senior professor Dr Shrinivas Ramchandra Siras for having same sex relationship.

On February 8, Professor Shrinivas Ramchandra Siras head of the department of Modern Indian Languages was caught on camera, having consensual sex with a male rickshaw puller, by some students. The scandalous footage was forwarded to college authorities the next day, and he was fired for gross misconduct.

AMU public relations officer, Rahat Abrar described the incident unfortunate and said “Siras was captured on camera having sex with a rickshaw-puller. It’s a scandal that no institution of repute can overlook. Therefore he was placed under suspension on February 9, by the order of the VC, Prof P.K. Abdul Azis”.

The 64 year old professor, who is shy of few months from retirement, when asked to comment on the issue and his sudden suspension, said what he couldn’t get in twenty years, he has received with this incident, sensationalized by a sting operation. He further said he had no intention to question the AMU authorities’ suspension verdict; he would love to leave the University quietly.

The unfortunate suspension of a gay professor has left the university ranks divided, there are some who flaunt morality and want strict action against those indulging in gay relationships. While some think the professor should be given a fair chance to present his side of the story and according to them it hardly matters, what he does outside the class rooms.

Last year, Delhi High Court had decriminalized homosexuality. It sent a strong signal to contractors of Indian culture that people have absolute right to chose their sexual partner as long as it is not harming anybody’s interest, be it homosexuality or heterosexuality.

How long will our conservative society take, to understand the emotions of people indulging in same sex relationship? Don’t you think we are hurting sentiments of other human beings? After all those who are homosexuals/lesbians, are also human beings.

Educational institutions are known for high morals and education. professors are considered to be role model to the students, if they cannot show good morals they have no right to educate others. As far personal rights are concerned it s all a mess. the people who favor the event should open brothels and for gay sex. In universities, there s no room for such immoral acts.
Since homosexuality is not a crime, the said Professor is not a culprit or a criminal as per law. But the University is having its own rules and regulations to maintain its standard. University is where the future of the world is molding up. Hence it is appropriate for an University to stick on the code of conduct on the faculty, as they are the role models for the students studying there. Hence, the suspension is absolutely valid and appropriate in the situation.
