DR GULFISHAN Khan, Reader, Centre of Advanced Study, Department of History attended XX Conference of the International Association of Historians of Asia (IAHA) organised by Jawaharlal Nehru University, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Institute of Asian Studies, Kolkata, Asia Project, India International Centre, New Delhi and Project on International Migration & Diaspora Studies (MOIA), on 14-17 November, 2008.
She presented two papers on two different panels. Her paper, ‘Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah (1874-1965) and Muslim Female Education Movement’ presented in the panel on Emergence of Knowledge Societies and Educational History was highly appreciated. The organisers of the panel emphasised that the contribution of Sheikh Abdullah, the founder of the Women’s College (AMU) should be highlighted at the national level, and the translations of his major writings from Urdu into English could be a worthwhile initiative in this direction. Her other research article, on the Western perceptions of the fourteenth century Sufi poet, Hafiz of Shiraz, entitled ‘Khwajah Shams-al-Din Mohammad Hafiz Shirazi: Turn of the Eighteenth Century British Images’ presented on the panel on the Literature and Art in Asian History was also well received. Participants in the conference included delegates from Asia, Europe, and USA.
