An analysis on rising cases of violence in schools
For the past one year, all over the world, the school environment remained marred by violence and aggression. India too witnessed a spurt in the shocking incidents of murders in schools.

A root cause analysis of the problem and researches that schools are meant to humanise children and make them socially sensitive rational beings are making them feeling-less brutes.

The researches have now given fairly valid evidence that aggression is not innate trait of human beings but a reaction to the lack of the provisions for constitutive experiences. The basic urge of human beings is to learn and be loved. When this does not happen, we take to death and destruction.

Aggression is expressed in many forms like violence, cruelty, foul mouthing, assaults, destruction, and killings. Aggression may be directed on others or oneself in the form of suicide. When the aggression is on one's own self; it takes the form of asceticism and self-mutilation.

Aggression arises when one's most basic needs of safety and self-esteem are not met with. Many educators now strongly feel that aggression breeds in our social institutions like schools and colleges due the following unchallenged and un-analyzed practices.

  • Competition in educational activities and normative evaluation scores as success in life

  • Competitive struggle for wealth and material acquisition

  • High expectations and unrealistic goals

  • Social and gender insensitivity and inequity

  • Violent movies on the media

  • Seeking short cuts to success

  • Lack of role models in educational circles

The upsurge in the incidents of violence in schools indicates that all is not well with the learning environment in schools. The shoot outs and murders in various schools in India and abroad stand the testimony.

When the sociological foundation of the school is weak both the teacher behaviour and the student behaviour deteriorate leading to inter-personal conflicts. Thus, there is a need to restore the school and classroom environment conducive to the development of pro-social skills of mutual concern, cooperation, caring and sharing.

Schools need to become social institutions conducive to learning and, for this, the learning environment in schools needs to planned, structured and mobilized so that the schools become an extended larger family of teachers and students both creating social environment conducive to learning is a complex task and requires hard work on the part of all school personnel.

As long as the educational institutions are riddled with competition, social biases and hierarchical administrative structures, they will keep on breeding aggressions. There are quite a few sensitive educators and social scientists that go the extent suggesting the de-schooling of society and dub the present classrooms practices as a hoax.

There is a need to run the educational institutions with participatory management practices and cooperative instructional methods, to mitigate the aggressive tendencies among school staff and students.
