NARENDRA MODI, the Chief Minister of Gujarat, has rightly observed that elephants have now become an elephantine problem for the UPA II.

Modi pointed out that with elections in UP and with the elephant being the election symbol of the BSP; would the 2012 Republic Day in New Delhi do away with elephants in the parades and look for some alternatives?
The decision of the Election Commission that all visible elephants must be removed from view opened up floodgates of possible scams. Several thousand meters of cloth had to be purchased on urgent priority to cover up the pachyderms – because is the election symbol of Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party.
Covering the statues of elephants could do more harm than good to the UPA II and, simultaneously, give an added advantage to the BSP because, a covered elephant would generate more curiosity than an uncovered one.
And no one can predict what would happen to the thousands of meters of covering materials procured in a hurry to comply with the directives of the EC. This is, undoubtedly, a case of misplaced priorities.
