The first face transplant of Spain was carried out at La Fe hospital in Valencia City by surgeon Pedro Cavadas and his associates. The patient is first anywhere to get a new tongue and jaw. It took 15 hours to transfer the facial parts.
IN SPAIN, the surgeons at La Fe hospital in Valencia City have carried out the first face transplant on a patient. It is being termed as an extraordinary transplant because of the following two reasons:
The patient is the first anywhere to get a new tongue and jaw.
The transplant also gave the patient a smile.
The 43-year-old patient had lost a part of his face more than 10 years ago due to radiotherapy to treat tumor.
The surgery and the transplant was done at La Fe hospital in Valencia City by surgeon Pedro Cavadas and his associates. After discharge from the hospital the patient will need to learn to eat and speak once again.
Cavadas said he had been forced to bring forward a press conference about the operation because press reports had revealed the identity of the donor.
It is the eighth face transplant in the world. It is reported that the transplant took 15 hours to transfer facial parts from a 35 year old donor who had died in a traffic accident.
