ALLAN IS in his mid-sixties, hailing from Old Trafford and a regular tourist to Goa for the last three decades. Ayuveda as a medicine is used to cure various ailments ranging from common cold to cancer. The ancient texts focus more on the lifestyle of the person in building a healthy mind and body.
 
Vajikaran is a branch of science that deals with the treatment or the lifestyle that can keep person sexually active throughout his life. It is one of the eight main branches of Ayurveda.
 
Rejuvenation and virility are often considered together because they are both concerned with the preservation and maintenance of vitality. Vajikaran [vaji = horse (stallion) and karan = ingredients] is a therapy meant for a person who has lost complete control over his desires.
 
Rejuvenation or Raysan therapy as described by the texts can be undergone by persons only twice or thrice in a lifetime since it has strict guidelines. On the other hand, virilisation can be undergone at any given time for a person in between the age of 20–80. The texts dissuade sexual intercourse before the age of 20 years and after 80 years.
 
In Ayurvedic texts many preparations are described which impart stallion-like vigour and increases the pleasure of sexual union. Some of the practices mentioned in the texts are impractical in the current age.
 
The texts mention about a practice where a man eats cock’s flesh fried in semen of the crocodile has continual erection for many nights.
 
Ayurveda has certain aphrodisiac medicines but there are some aphrodisiac food-items, which can boost the sexual strength and libido. The texts mention wheat, rice, black gram, and watercress besides nuts like almond, cashew nut, walnut, pistachio and groundnut.
 
Among the spices — nutmeg, cardamom, saffron, cinnamon bark have aphrodisiac properties.
 
Among the fruits mango, guava and banana have beneficial aphrodisiac qualities say the texts, while dairy products like milk, curd, buttermilk and ghee are also aphrodisiac agents.
 
The Indian form of medicine advises one not to indulge in too much of betel nut, catechu and fennel seeds, which has an effect on the production of semen by the body.
 
Many Indian herbs have aphrodisiac properties. Two herbs, which fall under the Museli group, are reputed for increasing the sperm count.
 
Depending on their color they are classified into Shweta museli or white muesli and kali muesli or black museli. The former one is referred to as museli in ayurveda and latter one is called as Taalmuli in Sanskrit.
 
White museli is very effective in increasing male potency and that it has been thought of as a substitute for Viagra says Dr Vinod Dessai, a practitioner from Goa.
 
There are several other preparations, herbs which the texts talk about having aphrodisiac properties.
 
Aphrodisiac for men according to the texts have been divided into five categories.
 
Promoting production of semen: (milk, ghee, onion vidari, muesli, gokshur, shatavari, yashtimadhu and semen from various other animals).
 
Purifying action on semen: (kushtha, sugar cane, bayberry).
 
Promoting fertilisation capacity in semen: (brahmi, shatavari, katuka, guduchi, amalaki, bala.
 
Herbs that increase libido: (akarakarabh, saffron, clove, garlic, pippali).
 
Tonics to combat premature ejaculation: (nutmet, ashwagandha, chandhan, jatamansi, kapikachchu). (See the list below).
 
The texts have warned that it is important that a person not only pays attention to these herbs but also to the principles of virilisation such as detoxification before the consumption of drugs as well as to gain control over one’s senses.
