An initiative to create `Tobacco Free Election Booths' in Tamil Nadu
As an initiative to create Tobacco Free Election Booths in Tamil Nadu, the Tamil Nadu People's Forum for Tobacco Control (TNPFTC) has submitted their representation to Thiru. Rajesh Lakhoni I.A.S, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) on 23 March 2016. The representation requested to create "Tobacco Free Election Booths" in the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2016.

The “Tobacco Free Election Booths” would comprise of:

  •  Prohibition of Smoking in Public Place: As per Section 4 of Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003; smoking in public place is prohibited. Thus the Elections Booths needs to display boards of minimum size of 60cm by 30cm in Tamil. The boards must be placed at the entrance of the booths and one at visible place inside, containing the warning “No Smoking Area – Smoking Here is an Offence”.
  •  Prohibition of Sale of Tobacco within 100 yards of the Election Booths: As per 6b of COTPA, there is prohibition of sale of tobacco within a radius of 100 yards of any educational institution. Since schools are the place where the Election booths will be placed, it is imperative that this rule is enforced during the elections.

Thiru. Rajesh Lakhoni considered the request put forth by TNPFTC and mentioned that necessary steps will be taken to create “Tobacco Free Election Booths” in Tamil Nadu.
