An open letter to the mayor of Hyderabad, Telangana
To quench the thirst of the citizens, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) announced a scheme last year ‘Coin Operated Water Purifying Plant’ and this year ‘Reverse Osmosis (RO) Plants’ wherever there is provision of building with water facility, which are to be run by Self-Help Groups. Through sources I got the information that these schemes are meant for Slum Areas.
Sir, citizens living in other than slum areas do require safe drinking water. I would like to bring to your notice that, there are several Residential Multi-Storied Buildings (RMSB) in the GHMC limits with no piped water connections. This is either due to the lack of infrastructure or the builder/promoter has not provided it.

In such buildings if the inmates want to avail the piped water connection then they have to shell out heavy amounts as per the MSB rules. As they have failed to pool the amounts from the inmates, water is procured from the private vendors which costs high as well as not 100% safe.

It is requested that, the safe drinking water plant schemes announced by the GHMC should also be made available to such RMSBs. As the schemes are income generating one to the GHMC and Metro Water Board, Resident Welfare Associations should be allowed to run the plants of their choice in their respective buildings.

Apart from the above, as the monsoon season is going to start, will the GHMC revive the ‘Rain Water Harvesting Pits/System Scheme’ on cost sharing basis for this year?

Sir, one hopes that, you will look into the issues raised and respond favorably in the public interest at the earliest.

I am your fellow citizen.
