China awarded its own version of a peace prize, the Confucius Peace Prize as a move to counter the Nobel committee's decision to honour imprisoned "criminal" Liu Xiaobo.
The Confucius Peace Prize has been awarded to former Taiwanese Vice President Lien Chan. Earlier, Tan Changliu, chairman of the Confucius Peace Award committee announced the name of the awardee at a press conference in Beijing. The Confucius Peace Prize is China's answer to the Nobel Peace Prize to the honouring of jailed dissident Liu Xiabo.
It is quite intriguing that the winner of the first Confucius Peace Prize didn't bother to show up to receive it personally and with reports doing rounds that he wasn’t even informed, it just gets more niggling. A little girl collected the prize on former Taiwan Vice-President's behalf. According to Confucius Peace Award Committee, Lien had won the prize for his efforts to improve relations between China and Taiwan, beating out five other nominees including Mahmoud Abbas and Nelson Mandela.
