The announcement of the death of Andhra Pradesh CM in a helicopter crash has come as a shock to the people of AP. The state has been overcome by grief after the announcement, with even Ganapati immersion celebrations being sombre and subdued.
HOURS AFTER the death of YSR has been announced Andhra still refuses to reel from the shock! The announcement of the death of the Andhra Chief Minister Y S Rajsekhara Reddy spread shock waves across the state on Thursday.
Thursday also being the 11th day of Ganesh Chaturthi, the day of immersion of the beloved deity Ganesha. The announcement of the death of Reddy dimmed the celebrations of the Ganesha Visarjan in Andhra. The Visarjan or immersion of Ganesha was calm and quiet as people mourned the death of their beloved chief minister. The streets remained empty too. YSR’s body was found at a hilltop in NallaMalla forests in the Kurnool district, burnt to ashes and brought to Kurnool for autopsy. The moment the news was flashed of the CM’s death, Andhra Pradesh went into a state of grief.
The minister was on his first surprise visit to villages to check the proper implementation of his policies, when the helicopter crash landed in a Maoist infested jungle near Kurnool district. Several channels flashed the news and the entire state prayed for his safety. Several statements were issued by the officials disclosing the rescue operations being undertaken to locate him. Many towns and villages closed shops when the tragic news came a day later. Some people were still hopeful of his miraculous comeback. People gathered around his residence and while some cried uncontrollably, a few who could not accept the truth and fainted outside his residence. In some places, Congress leaders pitched black flags to mourn the death of their leader. Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh condoled his death and said that Reddy's legacy would live forever. Dr Singh said that his death has created a big void in the state of Andhra Pradesh and the Congress party. He believed that YSR was a true leader who lost his life while serving the people of Andhra Pradesh and fulfilling his duties and responsibilities. Congress President Sonia Gandhi reiterated the thoughts of PM and believed YSR was a visionary who from day one of his tenure worked for the upliftment of the poor and the underprivileged classes of the society. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni declared that the National flag would fly half mast for the next days and all central government offices would be shuts for the same. However, P Chidambaram, Home Minister of India who officially confirmed the death of YSR refused to state the exact reason that caused the crash. He revealed that the helicopter had crash landed into several pieces and the bodies were charred. For the people of AP, the death of YSR means a huge loss, creating emptiness in their hearts and state, a place that can never be filled up by another CM in the near future. They can now only hope and pray that God grants YSR’s family the strength to cope up with this huge tragedy and the loss of their beloved family member!
