ANGIE  ANGIE, that is what the supporters of Angela Merkel were shouting the whole night as the favourable results at the national polls poured in. Angela Merkel, the present German Chancellor returned to power as the Chancellor for a second term. The first woman to have occupied that office four years ago and again the first woman to be voted back for a second term. The so called provincial woman from East germany is people's darling.

Angela Merkel has succeeded in shaking off the socialist ally of her first term who were a kind of drag and hindered her pace of progress. Now no such constraints as she has won a comfortable majority in the lower house of the parliament, Bundestag, in coalition with other Christian parties and the Free Democratic Party.Guido Westerwelle, leader of the FDP said that he would co-govern with the Christian Democrats of Angela Merkel. He is tipped to be the next Foreign Minister of Germany.

In the Bundestag 614 seats are being filled. Out of these, Angela Merkel and coalition partners will command the loyalty and support of 323 members. Indeed it is a comfortable majority to govern germany for the next four years.

Angela Merkel, a divorcee who carries the surname of her first husband is presently married to a professor of Chemistry in Berlin. They have no children. Angela is daughter of a protestant pastor posted in East Germany.

Will there be a major change of policy in her second term? It is hard to say at the present point of time. Her Bavarian political allies may press for a better system of education, a fair tax system and respect for civil liberties.

Angela Merkel is likely to have a smooth sailing in her second term as German Chancellor and will certainly take her country forward on the path of progress.
