Angelina Jolie in Pakistan to wipe tears of flood victims
To wipe the tears, imagine, who reached to sit with them in the hour of misery? It is Angelina Jolie who is on a two-day visit to the flood-hit country- Pakistan as the personal envoy of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugee.
SINCE ITS birth Pakistan has been a country wedded to idiosyncrasies, catastrophes and confusions. Ironically, it was also a country that has most fertile agricultural land on earth. Today, it is the home ground of international terror. World is looking the other way while it is facing the worst floods in human history; it is worst than Tsunami. And the height of insensitivity could be seen there, amidst of all the tragedy, it is the inhumane Taliban, which is brutally killing the innocent civilians while 2.5 million people are facing devastating floods.

Rescuers are struggling to reach 27,000 people still cut off by floods, while hundredes have died and many have lost everything. There are fears that diarrhoea and cholera will spread among the victims. Food is scarce and water supplies have been contaminated by the floods. Muddy brown waters have submerged fields, bridges and roads and the crops are destroyed. The devastation continues. There is a desperate need for temporary shelters, clean drinking water and toilets to avert a public health catastrophe.

To wipe the tears, imagine, who reached to sit with them in the hour of misery? It is Angelina Jolie, who is on a two-day visit to the flood-hit country as the personal envoy of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. The 35-year-old actress travelled to Nowshera town in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province and met Afghan refugees and distributed flood relief materials. She appealed to the rest of world to extend aid to the affected people. She said that she was shocked by the level of destruction in the country. It is an extraordinarily complex situation.

These are very, very long, extended situations that need our constant support for a very, very long time.

Jolie was wearing a black and red embroidered cloak. Her arms were covered by a traditional long-sleeved kurta. She is the daughter of Oscar-winning actor Jon Voight and she was married to star Jonny Lee Miller. Their marriage broke in 1999 just when Jolie's career was rising. In 1999, Angelina gained worldwide attention when she won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in the movie Girl.
