According to media reports, S Anitha had scored 1,176 marks out of 1,200 in her class-XII board exams, but did not perform well in the NEET. Distressed over not being able to secure a medical seta, she allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself.

Anitha was from a village in Ariyalur district located around 300 kilometres from Chennai. Her father, who is a daily wage labourer said he found her hanging after she did not crack the NEET successfully.

In the aftermath of Anitha's suicide, a massive public outrage has erupted in the State, especially in Chennai where groups of students, Tamil nationalist movements, Leftist groups and Dalit activists held massive protest demonstrations and burned effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

According to the police, a total of 1450 people have been arrested throughout the State. On the other hand, almost all shops and commercial establishments in Senthurai and Ariyalur towns have been shut down as a mark of respect to the deceased girl.
