Another woman burnt alive
In yet another incident of harassment for dowry, a woman in the Firozabad district of Uttar Pradesh was burnt alive by her in-laws and brother in-laws. The incident occurred in a village near Firozabad.
IN A horrendous incident, a woman in the Firozabad district of Uttar Pradesh was burnt alive by her in-laws and brother in-laws who were demanding dowry. The incident occurred on Saturday (August 1) in Mohammadpur Biharipur village near Firozabad. According to the report field by the brother of the deceased, his sister Guddi was married four years back to Prahlad, a resident of Mohammadpur village in Firozabad but had no children. Her in-laws and brother in-laws had been eying her land for some time. As she had no children, her in-laws and brother-in-laws planned a conspiracy to get rid of her so that they could lay claim to her share of land.

On Saturday when the husband of Guddi was away from home owing to some personal errands, Guddi’s in-laws and brother in-laws tied her legs and hands with rope and sprinkled kerosene over her body, and laid her on a pyre for the purpose of burning her alive. On hearing her scream, villagers ran to save her and informed her parents about the developments. The villagers took her to nearby hospital but she died on her way to hospital owing to severe burns.

It is an irony, that women are being burnt and harassed for dowry, property and a host of other irrational agendas, in the twenty-first century. Time and again, we read and watch various reports of women's exploitation, but such incidents only seem to be increasing with every passign day. Where is the National Commission for Women; do they only work for high profile cases, such as the Shiny Ahuja rape case. How long will women face exploitation in our country which has given birth to many women of repute.
