AOL HAS launched a new smartphone friendly mobile website, along with two new Android apps on Thursday July 22. The new AOL smartphone portal will support HTML5 for rapid rendering of content for the users of the Apple iPhone and Android-based handsets.
The newly launched smartphone portal can be accessed from any mobile browser, the company announced. It was designed as a place where mobile phone users would be able to find AOL content that interests them the most. AOL released an app which will offer their Android users for reading content of AOL's popular sites including Engadget, PopEater, Fanhouse, MapQuest and AOL Mail.
In a statement, David Temkin, AOL's new Vice President of Mobile said, “Android has emerged as a top-tier smartphone platform…So, while we’ll continue to focus on development for multiple mobile platforms…Today’s smartphones offer a completely different experience from the previous generation of WAP-based sites, and AOL will be taking full advantage of the possibilities these new devices can offer, both on the mobile Web and in apps.”
Previously, AOL's mobile portal was based on Wireless Application Protocol or WAP. The AOL app will be eventually transferred over to other platforms including Blackberry and the iPhone. AOL also released an Android version of its DailyFinance app, which is also available for the iPhone, along with the new Android app.
