As Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh is slated to visit flood hit areas in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka on Friday, the two state governments hope that he declares the flood a national calamity and eases the burden of rehabilitation on them.
THE GOVERNMENTS of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka are eagerly awaiting the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh's visit, who would be visiting the two states on Friday, October 9, to see the devastation in the wake of the Krishna flood. The two states hope that, this calamity be declared as a National one. More than 200 people have died and heavy losses were seen in to agriculture and roads.
The PM’s programme has been slightly changed and it has been slated for two days. Earlier, he was to visit the region only for a day. As per AP Chief minister K Rosaiah, the PM would arrive directly to Vijayawada airport from Delhi on Friday afternoon. He would then go for an aerial survey of Krishna and Guntur districts. From there he would go to Hyderabad, where he would hold a review meeting with officials.On Saturday, Dr Singh is expected to take stock of the devastation in Kurnool and Mahboobnagar districts of AP and Raichur of Karnataka.
Union Minister of Municipal Administration, Jaipal Reddy said that, he would accompany the Prime Minister. Incidentally, Jaipal Reddy originally belongs to Mahaboobnagar Disrict but he represents the Loksabha from other places of Telangana.The AP administration hopes that the PM would declare the calamity a national one, as it would put the burden of rehabilitation on central relief sources like the PM's relief fund. This would aptly covers agricultural losses in the state, expected to be around Rs 1250 crores.
