Apple refreshes iPod line-up with multi-touch Nano
The whole iPod lineup was refreshed excluding the iPod Classic. Apple iPod Shuffle, Nano and the iPod Touch, world's most popular portable gaming device, got software as well as hardware changes.
APPLE'S ANNUAL iPod based event was full of announcements and less of surprises as many speculations including a possibly smaller Nano and overhauling of iTunes proved right. During the 90 minute keynote address Steve Jobs, Apple CEO, announced a lot of new offerings from Apple for almost all the devices leaving aside the Mac.

The whole iPod lineup was refreshed excluding the iPod Classic. Apple iPod Shuffle, Nano and the iPod Touch, world's most popular portable gaming device,  got software as well as hardware changes.

The new iPod Shuffle was back to its old form factor with a click wheel and a square size. It also accompanies the clip and speakable playlist like last model. As a new feature, now Shuffle can have Genius mixes along with last model's VoiceOver to tell you what song or artist you’re listening to.

It boasts of a 15 hours of battery life and will be available in five colors: blue, pink, green, orange. The price for the 2GB model is $49. Sadly, there is no 4GB version available.

The iPod Nano which had its 6th generation model released doesn't sport the iconic Apple click wheel. Nano is the iPod which got the most overhauling as its size got reduced by 46 percent and is 42 percent lighter. It sports a 1.5 inch multi-touch which can have home screen and rotates with the gestures.

Other features include a clip like shuffle, FM radio, NikePlus, pedometer, and 29 languages. It has a 24 hour battery life and the iPod Nano 6G comes in seven colors, including a Product Red version. The price is $149 for 8GB, $179 for 16GB version. Nano lost the camera and video recording facility which existed in the last model.

Apple announced that the iPod Touch has outsold the portable game players from Sony and Ninetendo combined and is the most popular gaming device of the world. The refreshed iPod Touch got the Apple's custom made A4 chip, 3 axis gyro, iOS 4.1 with GameCenter, and front-facing camera with FaceTime which all are present in the iPhone 4.

Retina display and HD video recording also comes to iPod Touch but the still picture quality is not as good as iPhone 4's. It can play nonstop music for 40 hours. The iPod Touch is just 7.2 mm wide and merely 101 grams in weight. The price for 8GB is $229, for 32GB $299, and for 64Gb it is $399.

iPod Classic didn't even got a mention in the 90 minute keynote address by Steve Jobs and many thought it was out of the lineup. Nevertheless, the iPod Classic is still there in the stores.

From scaling down of Nano and stripping its video recording capabilities, it seems Apple is trying to promote the iPod Touch which is its best selling model and runs the iOS. HD recording is a reason good enough for buyers to get the iPod Touch which is not only a music player but an Internet device along with access to 250,000 apps designed for various categories.
