THE OFFICE of the Chief Justice of India, has been for some time, an issue of contention. The appointment of judges to this rank is an arduous task, which requires a large amount of consideration on the part of the concerned authorities.
One way of assuring transparency to the process and to ensure the least amount of hassles in the process, is to make the concerned senior judges take on the mantle for a year each, on a rotation basis.
Many judges who are suitable for this post, often retire by the time they can take on this mantle with seniority, due to the long tenures of the incumbent chief justices. This system would ensure that the state is able to benefit from their service. It would also ensure that the judiciary and the country would benefit from the rise of the healthy competition, giving rise to fresh ideas.
The idea of providing this post of the apex body, by rotation has been successfully conceived by the Management faculty of Delhi university, where all professors get a chance to become dean of the faculty for one year each, by rotation.
The government can take a further proactive step and introduce this concept for the post of the Chief Information Commissioner, whereby the senior most information commissioner can take the office for a year, by rotation.
