Are boarding schools losing sheen?
In many boarding schools across the world, the menace of alcohol, drugs and smack continues. Year after year, the cases keep on coming to light such as the one reported from a well known school in Ajmer city of Rajasthan.

The problem of tobacco, alcohol and drugs and occasional indulgence in sex behind the high walls and closed doors of boarding schools' dormitories and senior boys' rooms is the biggest worry of school functionaries and the parents.

Often boarding schools boast of zero tolerance on drugs, drinking, and smoking but the school teenagers deem it a challenge and dare the school authorities. Elsewhere, the authorities in the posh and elite boarding schools are carrying out random drug tests of students and searching their rooms with dos for presence of drugs.

There are stereotypically snobbish elite boarding schools for rich and extra-modern kids which breed problems. Some of the socio-cultural reasons for taking to drugs at young age in such schools are ascribed to the following reasons that were got through a brainstorming.

  • Neglect of children at home and schools
  • drug seen as the school tradition
  • Behavioural disorder of parents and older siblings
  • Unhealthy attitude of the elders at home
  • Inappropriate role models
  • Peer pressure
  • Lack of a social support system
  • Lack of information and awareness
  •  home sickness
  • taking challenges of defiance
  • experimentation
  •  school's week psycho-social foundation
  •  lack of life skill education

It needs to be understood that the drug dependence is a serious and chronic health problem wherein the addict repeatedly craves for psycho-active experiences. Moreover

Drug dependence is a spiralling trap, since soon a stage of ever increasing craving is reached and drugs become the sole purpose of living.

Drugs are detrimental to physical, mental and social health of a person. The drugs affect the normal functioning of brain. They either slow down the nervous system or interfere with it. This results in  a destructive behavior by the person on drugs and indulgence into sex abuse and criminality.

In boarding schools relationships in the senior classes tend to become coercive or bullying and the faculty as well as administration cave in. For many junior victims and the abused, it becomes a nightmarish prison-like experience in which the personal dignity and safety is jeopardized by the bullying and abusing inmates, describes a sensitive child who had rejected the boarding school in a month after admission.
