Are dedicated days needed?
Friendship Day, Mothers Day, Fathers Day, Sisters Day, Brothers Day, Teachers Day, Childrens day; the list goes on and on. Just imagine what the scene would be like if everyday is dedicated to someone or the other.

UNCLE’S DAY, Aunt’s Day, Grandparents’ Day, et al. The list can be extended because the ties of kinship are numerous in India. So we would end up with days dedicated to our tayas, tayis, masis, mausas, buas, mamas, mamis, and cousins and so on.

No doubt, such days carry a special meaning and value. Dedicating a day to a particular kin gives us an opportunity to show our love and concern towards the said kin, something we do not generally do otherwise. We also show our appreciation and gratitude towards these loved ones and often give them gifts as a token of admiration and love. In fact these dedicated days are meant for those who are generally ignored and neglected in life, but contribute their mite in making our lives more meaningful and valuable, all the same.

We need additional special days to single out all such people. In addition, too much money and time is wasted in celebrations associated with such dedicated days. On such days, we usually buy cards to greet the beneficiaries, buy them flowers and gifts and treat them. Much of this hype is created with a commercial motive - to promote the sale of cards, perfumes and flowers etc. Amidst all this display of adoration, often the sanctity of the kinship is lost. Sometimes, misunderstandings can arise as the beneficiary may entertain greater expectations which the other party is unable to fulfill for obvious reasons. This leaves the beneficiary disappointed.

I personally believe that such dedicated days are not needed in the first place. One can show one’s love and gratitude whenever one feels like it or whenever the beneficiary needs it. In any case, one’s birthday is a special day and that day can easily be earmarked for reaffirming our love and affection towards the beneficiary, be it the son or the daughter or the doting grandpa or the admired mother.
