Are Republic Day rehearsals that lead to traffic jams important?
With the Republic Day rehearsals starting today, people should avoid commuting around India Gate and its surrounding areas till noon. But are these Republic Day rehearsals actually necessary? Can there not be a more effective and less disruptive way to conduct the same?

THERE ARE just nine days to go for Republic Day and the rehearsals for the parade have also started. It will be great had the Indian government thought about the future of the country and rehearsed for the future, like these participants of the Republic Day? Sadly, we are a country happy with our rich culture and traditions of the past. The parade rehearsals will take place on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday during the week, between 9.45am and 12pm, which is scheduled to start at Vijay Chowk and end at India Gate, reported Hindustan Times - and will lead to a lot of traffic jams and delays for commuters around these areas. India celebrates its Republic Day on 26 January, to observe the date, when the constitution of India came into being thus replacing the Government of India Act 1935.

One has to wonder, do we seriously need four days for rehearsals, after the participants have been practising for such a long time in their respective places too before they headed to Delhi. It is due to these rehearsals that the locals in the capital will be facing major problems, as they might have to look for alternative routes due to the roads being closed. Even buses that would be travelling on the route have been diverted. Traffic jams will be witnessed for sure during the rehearsal days, as seen in the past too. Hence, one of the safest and the best ways to reach one’s destination on time is by travelling via metro.

It is known that a huge sum of money will be spent over these days for rehearsals, as participants from various parts of the country come over to the capital. India always treats this day as a very momentous one; hence, they do not compromise on the quality of the show. So, they do not mind spending a big amount, as it is also a matter of pride. Still, are these spending justified, when there are around 300 million living below the poverty line in India, which is a matter of shame where the rich is getting richer and the poor are just getting poorer?

It is time for the citizens of the nation to ponder about it. Should we just be proud of things in the past and neglect what is in front of us?
