Are senior players a must in the Indian Test side?
Sunil Gavaskar feels that India needs to bring in some youngsters into the side, which has many senior players; some of them should be axed. Gavaskar made this comment after India's miserable performances in away tours.
WHEN IS the best time for some of the Indian players to retire from the game? Who will replace these players in future matches? Do we have good reserve players who will play for India at the international level? These are some of the questions that will linger in an ardent cricket fan's mind, as Sunil Gavaskar said that it is time for youngsters to be brought into the side and remove some senior players, reported PTI.
These comments from the Indian legend, Sunil Gavaskar, have come after the Indian team put up a string of embarrassing performances in away tours. Just to rub salt into the wounds, when experts thought India would play well against Australia, they are on the brink of a second straight away series white wash. Hence, Gavaskar's outbursts on the issue do not require a scientific explanation.
We do not know whether the BCCI will take this as a good idea and implement it. The selectors have too much respect for the senior pros that they do not drop them from the squad, expecting them to bounce back every now and then. They must take into consideration that these players are past their prime. They have been, for too long, waiting for the player to call it a day, which at the moment seems to be a distant dream. It seems unconceivable for an Indian team to be without their stalwarts, but the day is soon arriving. There are many Indian players in the team who are more than 35 years of age. Are they physically fit?
Gavaskar may or may not be right when he says that youngsters should be brought into the side. The chances that young players like Kohli have got, does not auger well for the Indian team, especially in the longer format of the game. Umesh Yadav may have something else to say here, as he has been impressive in the chances he has got for India.
But the ODI team having young players has helped the team shape up well against various teams. So, it might be helpful if the Indian team has a young side for the Test matches too and wait for what results they can produce on various tours.
PTI reports that Gavaskar does not mean that he wants Dhoni to be removed from the captaincy, which many want. One would agree with the fact that he has been one of the best cricket captains ever for India, so instead of removing him from captaincy, he needs to be given a longer break, as the losing streak in away tours must have taken a mental toll on his body. His body language has changed over the course of time.
It is up to the Indian selectors and the BCCI to take a strong stance, as to what kind of team they would want to have. If they want to bring in fresh faces and build for the future, they have to take the call straight away. They have to act tough like the Australian selectors do, else it may be too late and the players waiting in the wings too may get old.
