Latest statistics released by National Commission for Women (NCW) proved that India is unsafe for women and Uttar Pradesh emerged as the most insecure place for women followed by Delhi. Surprisingly, both states are ruled by a woman Chief Minister.
AFTER MORE than 60 years of sovereignty, this fact is shameful for citizens. Whenever any rape case is highlighted by the media, ruling women leaders deny the statistics about the increase of crime in their state. Recently, there was news of 13 rape cases in one week in Uttar Pradesh but Chief Minister Mayawati has refused to accept that her state is unsafe for women.

Latest statistics released by National Commission for Women (NCW) proved that India is unsafe for women and Uttar Pradesh emerged as the most dangerous place for women, closely followed by Delhi. Surprisingly, both states are ruled by woman Chief Minister. Rajasthan is in the third place.
Uttar Pradesh recorded about 7,000 cases of crime against women in the year of 2010-2011, and 60 per cent cases were rape cases. In most cases culprits are roaming scot-free, and cases are lying in various district court. On the other hand, Delhi has registered 1500 cases in 2010-2011, and crime is almost double from previous year. Rape case victims are worst affected."I fail to understand what government is doing to curb all these case?" said one victim from Delhi. "There is no site of implementation of law, it is really frustrating", added the victim. All states and UTs of India witnessed the jump in cases of offences against women. NCW statistics shows that there is major increase in percentage of crimes and in villages women have to tolerate all these silently due to lack of laws. All over India percentage of crimes are nearly double, and women are not safe in any part of the country."How many days I stay at home to keep myself away from crime?" asked a teenager who is regularly travelling in DTC bus for tuition classes. "Eve-teasing is common problem during travelling, I live in fear," said another teenager. "Women should learn self-defence; they should not rest on implementation on laws," added one lady inspector. The bottom line is that women are not safe in India so the question of why and when prevails.

I believe defensive techniques should be made compulsory in all girls' schools and colleges. Criminals have no mercy. Therefore, we should not pardon them.
