Many would question 'what Challa' as it came and did not make any noise. SRK's latest film Jab Tak Hai Jaan released its first song and no one seemed to care, which is not just surprising, but reminding the superstar that he needs to grow up with his movies as well.
AS A kid, I used to think that all the actors actually start singing when they see a beautiful girl around and music is magically added to the environment. This was my notion for quite some time until I discovered Sonu Nigam and what he does for a living! However, I am sure that had I heard Shahrukh Khan's latest song 'Challa' from Jab Tak Hai Jaan then, I would have known sooner that a person's voice normally matches when they talk and sing.
The song in question has all its usual contents – freshness, foreign location, a handsome guy with a guitar singing and moving from one place to another with his devil may care kind of smile and attitude, his cool clothes, yet, something is not quite in place. Apart from the fact that Rabbi Shergil's voice doesn't match with the King of Bollywood's voice at all, there is also the fact that we have seen all the similar visuals in films such as Mohabattein, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, Mujhse Dosti Karoge.
On the other hand, in spite of being an ardent fan of the man himself, I must say that SRK needs to grow up in his films as well. It is becoming tedious to watch him as the cool, funky romantic hero. When he came in Chak De he did such a good job. Everyone thought that he is finally over his teenage years.
We cannot judge or write off the film with just one song but it does raise questions. When Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge was released, the novelty of the abroad was new with most of us and everyone lapped up the road trip, cute tiffs between the protagonist and finally their never dying love but with Jab Tak Hai Jaan, nothing is new. We have some foreign locations, two young heroines and one superstar. One expected more from the master creator, Yash Chopra, than making a formula film. All is not lost but still the promotional song was not a great launcher and no one seemed excited about it.
