Argentina's Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio elected as new Pope
In one of the most unexpected and surprising choices to be the new Catholic religious leader, Argentina's Jorge Mario Bergoglio, 76, has been elected as the new Pope.. Henceforth, the new pope will be known as 'Pope Francis I'.

The faithful and pilgrims were delighted to see white smoke coming out from a chimney on the roof of the Sistine Chapel and one hour thereafter Pope Francis I appeared on the central balcony of St. Peter's Basilica.

With the announcement “Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum. Habemus Papam", Pope Francis I became the 266th pontiff. Moreover, he is the first Jesuit to become pope.

The gathering cheered wildly with shouts "Viva il Papa" and some ran towards the basilica as the smoke billowed from a narrow makeshift chimney and St Peter's bells rang.

Born on 17 December 1936, the new pope holds a degree as a chemical technician, entered the seminary of Villa Devoto. On 3 June 1997, he was appointed Coadjutor Archbishop of Buenos Aires and succeeded Cardinal Antonio Quarracino on 28 February 1998.  He was created and proclaimed Cardinal by Blessed John Paul II in the consistory of 21 February 2001, of the Title of St. Robert Bellarmine.
