Is this the same Dhoni who seemed quite agile and innovative when it came to leading Chennai Super Kings in Indian Premier League? All the exuberance and the ability to play quality cricket was missing from the scene.
IT IS finally bye-bye for India from the ICC T20 World Cup in the Caribbean. There were a lot of speculations and calculations making rounds that would have resulted in India’s chances of making a cut into the semi-finals, but everything went for a swing after the ‘men in blue’ came a cropper against the Sri Lankans. It was history revisited second time in succession when India were ousted in the super eight round without winning a single match. Even last year in England India met with the same fate.
MS Dhoni and his brigade have once again let down a billion hearts that were right behind their team, but it seems that the captain gives a damn to the people back in India. What is more disheartening after the loss was Dhoni’s arrogance and stubbornness to accept the loss in the right spirit and was least bothered about the criticism in the country. Quite shrewdly, Dhoni tried to pass the buck over to IPL for the world cup debacle.
Is this the same Dhoni who seemed quite agile and innovative when it came to leading Chennai Super Kings in Indian Premier League? All the exuberance and the ability to play quality cricket was missing from the scene. Pathetic is the word that would aptly define India’s performance at the T20 world cup! Doesn’t it mean that Dhoni was more circumspect and responsible in his approach towards his IPL franchisee than towards the country? The players these days are more interested in raking moolah by playing for their respective franchisees and least bothered about national pride.
Can anybody ask Dhoni that was he not the one who had proclaimed at the start of the world cup that all Indian players were fit and fresh and raring to go? Why would you then change your stance when you perform below par in a prestigious tournament like world cup. It seems childish and ridiculous to hear when Dhoni says in front of the cameras that the late night parties and the other IPL events hampered their performance at the world cup. But was he so innocent to have not known the consequences, if there are any, pertaining to late night parties and functions? Was he and the other players were forcefully made to attend the parties?
What answers would you have Dhoni to have been playing beach volley ball and chilling out on the sea instead of sweating out in the nets before the crucial super eight matches? And when questions are fired towards Dhoni about the growing discontent back in the country, he says he doesn’t care about demonstrations and what people feel. Has Dhoni grown bigger than the country that the sentiment of people stand nowhere for him?
The need of the hour is to review the composition of the team and if need be the captaincy as well. There are people like Sachin Tendulkar who are a source of inspiration not just because of their performances but also because of their down to earth attitude, but the same could not be said for Dhoni who is touted as captain cool. In the present tournament, Dhoni has disappointed not only with his captaincy and in choosing playing eleven, but he has been pathetic with the bat as well. Dhoni and his band of losers may not be bothered about what people say, but we as a people of India are bothered when it comes to national sentiment and pride. So, play for the country and play for the pride!
