Aruna Shanbaug after 42 years bid adieu to her sufferings
She came, she suffered and died. Aruna Shanbaug's hollow cheeks, pale eyes shook the whole nation. This most enthusiastic and cheerful lady faced plight when she was being raped and brutally assaulted. She opted for a profession where she was assigned to take of the patients who so ever admit in King Edward Memorial Hospital. After gaining experience from Haldipur, Uttar Kannada, Karnataka's hospitals came in Mumbai hospital with same zeal. But soon her whole life changed.

On 27 November 1973, she was sexually assaulted by Sohanlal Walmiki who worked there as a sweeper. He not only outraged her modesty but in order to hide his crime he tried to strangulate her with dog chain. But rather killing her that chain cut off her oxygen supply to brain which left her cortically blind and she lapsed into coma.

The legal action took place and after being convicted he sentenced to very small punishment- seven years. But after paying seven years confinement in Indian jail he came out and vanished. But did he really pay for Aruna's pain? From 42 years, she was in the same hospital and same situation. Although her bedridden condition made everyone cry but somewhere Indian law failed to fetch justice to her.

In 2010, a plea was filed for euthanasia where one of Aruna's journalist friend Pinki Virani requested law to set Aruna free from this disgraceful life. But all in vain. Mercy killing was not legal in India even if one in such state. You have right to live but euthanasia is pretty malodorous to Indian law. Perhaps, people misuse laws but patently in Aruna's case the story was pretty different. Even court considered the plea and set up three-member medical committee which concluded she could be in a permanent vegetative state.

In 2011, the supreme court has legalized passive euthanasia in which Aruna's case fell. And changed mercy killing into passive euthanasia. SC granted her with the withdrawal of life support in a permanent vegetative state. But what was the use of keeping her all alive and making things more worsen?

However, on 18thMay 2015, she bid good bye to those who supported, took care of her and her sufferings but still Aruna's death leaved a mark on court which inspite of Aruna's bad condition did not allowed to end life. Neither she chose this life nor that situation where she lives in. But at least court could have understand her situation. Four decade and two years is the long time to wait for a natural death. Seems like god has shown mercy on her and blessed her with peaceful death.
