ON THURSDAY, May 13 the Ascension Thursday or the Spasovden is being observed with much gusto. On this day, catholics all over the world celebrate Jesus Christ’s ascension to heaven after he was resurrected from death on Easter Day. This day also marks the fortieth day after Easter Sunday and always falls on a Thursday. It is believed that during the forty-day period after his resurrection, he preached and intermingled with his apostles and disciples.
According to the Gospel of Luke, the ascension took place in Bethany. However, in contrast, the Acts said that it took place on the Mount Olivet. Some Catholics follow the custom of blessing of beans and grapes after the commemoration of the dead in the Canon of the Mass, the blessing of first fruits, afterwards done on Rogation Days, the blessing of a candle, the wearing of mitres by deacon and subdeacon, the extinguishing of the paschal candle, and triumphal processions with torches and banners outside the churches to commemorate the entry of Christ into heaven.
The solemnity of the Ascension will be celebrated on Sunday, May 16, marking the entry of Jesus' humanity into divine glory in God's heavenly domain 40 days after His resurrection.
Spasovden is also the professional day of bread makers, drivers, builders, and inn keepers.
