Asparagus could be behind breast cancer; but what is the way forward?
In a shocking revelation, researchers have found that a compound found in asparagus has been linked to cancer.

The research published in journal Nature has found out that asparagine, a compound usually found in asparagus could be directly linked to breast cancer.

The research has its limitations as it was not conducted on humans but mice, however, the research yet carries much weight given the widespread levels of breast cancer in the world at present.

Also, it must be made clear that asparagine was not the cause of cancer but was found to increase the chances of causing cancer and make it spread even more quickly as compared to normal situations.

So where the study actually can help is, if it establishes the connection between asparagine and cancer in human as it will help scientists find a new way to deal with breast cancer and find cures for it. This is also important as human body produces asparagine on its own as well.

Using a two-pronged approach, scientists administered the mice with L-asparaginase, the chemotherapy drug that inhibits the production of the amino acid asparagine and on the other hand, they also put restrictions administered to the mice. This way, the researchers concluded that asparagine does play a role in the way cancer attacks a body.

So the focus of the research now is to understand how asparagine works also that scientists can come up with better treatment for cancer. And in one of the ways to tackle it, scientists have been exploring the possibilities of a new leukaemia chemotherapy known as L-asparaginase that can help in slowing down the spread of breast cancer.

So while simple changes on diet cannot help in containing cancer, and while we are still far from solutions that would work, it is becoming more and more evident that the diet we consume does impact the course of the disease.
