Assam government releases Rs 1 crore for 'Village Rockstars'
The BJP-led Assam government has released rupees one crore for publicity and promotion for the Oscar nominated film Village Rockstars. The film, which has been nominated as India's official entry to the Best Foreign Language film section of the Oscars 2019, has depicted dream and aspiration of some minor village boys and girls.

The independent film made and directed by Rima Das, a woman from a village of Soygaon area of the Kamrup (rural) district around 35 km from the state capital Dispur, Friday evening called on Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. In the meeting, which was also attended by finance minister Himanta Biswa Sharma and industry minister Chandra Mohan Patowary, the chief minister announced that the state government would release rupees 50 lakh. Thereby Das would get altogether rupees one crore from the state government as earlier also the state government released rupees 50 lakh to her for the publicity and promotional task.

Village Rockstars was released on Friday across Assam and some parts of the country simultaneously. It is the first Assamese film nominated for the most coveted Oscar Awards. As soon as the news broke Assamese people, residing in the state or outside the state alike, became jubilant and started to send congratulatory messages to the team of the film. Some have begun to urge all to see the film. Social media has been flooded with such messages. Since the very day of the release of the National Award winning movie all the cine halls in Guwahati and other parts of the state have, reportedly, been tight packed with Assamese cine-lovers. On the eve of her movie release, director as well as producer Das on Wednesday, addressing a press meet appealed all to come and see the film.  

Rupkonwer Jyoti Prasad Agarwalla produced and directed the first Assamese film 'Joymoti' in 1935, the third talkie film of the country which portrayed the supreme sacrifice of the 16th century Ahom princess Joymoti. Since then many stalwarts as well as cultural doyens including music maestro Dr Bhupen Hazarika had made some highly acclaimed Assamese films of which some even won National and international awards. Village Rockstars, also received some international awards and critical appreciations apart from the National Award.
