THE ASSAM Police headquarter has decided to use arms and ammunition recovered from militant groups, stated by Mr. Sankar Baruah, IPS, the Director General of Police, Assam. The Assam police has already given an appeal in the Guwahati High Court seeking permission to use arms and ammunition recovered from militant groups. It is to be noted that security forces recovered a large number of arms and ammunition from various militant groups of the state. These arms and ammunitions are lying in various police stations of the state. There are many modern weapons including AK series rifles. Assam Police is yet to receive the green signal from the court.

The situation in Assam is similar to what happens in the north Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. Various militant set-ups have been operating in the terrorism-affected state, and often police and the army recover large amount of arms and ammunition from them and their hideouts. Once they are tallied and marked, automatic weapons and explosives are absorbed within the police and other defence organizations after following a due-deligence process.
