Asteroid heading towards earth, NASA wants people to pray
NASA, which has predicted the advancement of a large asteroid towards New York City, wants people to pray to help them face this space hurdle. NASA chief Charles Bolden told lawmakers at a US House of Representatives Science Committee hearing Tuesday that the asteroid and meteor may collide with earth.
Several days ago, on February 15, Chelyabinsk, Russia saw a large shower of asteroids that had a lot of impact. Windows shattered and the people present at the spot said that they experienced a lot of pressure and 1500 people were injured. On the same day, later, a large asteroid was also spotted closer to Earth. It did not enter the Earth's atmosphere but then it was too close.
These two incidents have made the space watchers more active and they feel that we live in a time when our Solar System is very restless and hazardous objects are passing close to the Earth at frequent intervals. Committee Chairman Lamar Smith, a Texas Republican, who called the hearing said, “We were fortunate that the events of last month were simply an interesting coincidence rather than a catastrophe.”
In the same hearing, White House science advisor John Holdren also said that an asteroid, one kilometer in length, can destroy civilization.
However, one need not worry as it was pointed out that only 10 percent of 10,000 potential Earth destroying asteroids have been found. Who knows more might be just around the corner and NASA confidently said that no immediate threat to the US has been seen but people must still pray.
