At least 19 killed in Varanasi flyover collapse; CM Adityanath orders inquiry
At least 19 people died and several others were injured when two pillars of an under construction flyover collapsed in Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi on Tuesday evening. The incident occurred in Cantt area of the city. The flyover which was being built by a state-run corporation collapsed during the peak traffic hours.

Reportedly, a mini-bus, few cars and two-wheelers were crushed under the huge slab that fell to the ground. A total of eight cranes were used for clearing the debris including a crane with a 200 tonne lifting capacity.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister has ordered setting up of a three-member inquiry committee to determine the exact cause behind the collapse of the under-construction flyover. The death toll is likely to increase given that some people could still be buried under the debris.

The probe team that has been formed is being led by APC Rajpratap Singh. Along with Singh, the other two members of the team are Chief Engineer of the Irrigation Department Bhupendra Sharma and Jal Nigam MD Rajesh Mittal. The team has been asked to submit its report within 48 hours. Taking quick action, 4 officials have already been suspended including Chief Project Manager HC Tiwari, Project Manager KR Sudan, Assistant Engineer Rajesh Singh & Engineer Lal Chand.

Seven teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) force were immediately put in to action to clear the debris and search for survivors, if any. The Uttar Pradesh government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each for the family members of the deceased and Rs 2 lakh compensation to those injured in the accident.

"HM also spoke to the district magistrate of Varanasi who has apprised him of the incident. The @NDRFHQ teams have been rushed to the spot for rescue operations," tweeted Home Minister's office.
