The attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team should give that section of Indian media some food for thought that had spoken out against the Indian decision not to send the Indian team to Pakistan in the wake of the Mumbai attacks
BY NOW everyone would have heard about the attack on the Sri Lankan cricket players in Lahore, Pakistan. The team bus came under attack from militants as they arrived for Day 3 for the second test match against Pakistan. The details are just coming in and the numbers of injured players varies from three to eight (depending on which channel you listen to).The TV images bear an uncanny similarity to the attack carried out in 2001 on the Parliament in India and in Mumbai in 2008. Backpack carrying men with guns in hands just converged on to the scene and fired. Five policemen have been reported killed.
That this has happened in Pakistan, a cricket crazy country, is not surprising. The Taliban type forces that are hell bent on creating chaos in the entire country, with possibly the final aim of taking control of this nuclear armed country, have been working to a clear cut plan. They want to spread as much terror as possible using the simple method of these back pack carrying foot soldiers. For this, they need to not just create actual mayhem but spread as much fear as possible. What better way to isolate Pakistan further and create fear than to attack cricketers in a cricket loving nation? Now which country will ever think of sending their players to the country? In one simple-to-mount attack, the terrorists have achieved their goal.
It would be pertinent in this scenario to ask our English speaking, bleeding-heart, liberal media, about the wisdom of their gospel that India should do all it takes to maintain contacts with Pakistani people and civil society via cultural exchanges and especially through cricket. When in the wake of the Mumbai attacks of November 2008, the Indian governement had said that the Indian players would not be sent to Pakistan for a series, this section of media in every chat show and cricket programme had questioned that decision and rued the fact that we as a nation were bowing to terrorists by failing to send our players across.
What do they have to say in their own defense now? If the Sri Lankan team ( that has no political or military conflict with Pakistan) could be so audaciously attacked, imagine what could have happened to the Indian players. At that point, the Pakistan government was in full denial mode about Pakistanis having carried out the Mumbai attacks and the tension between the two countries was very high and very palpable. It is time that this section of media and media persons and the so called intellectuals of the nation stop confusing between the Pakistani state, the Pakistani ’non-state players’, and the civil society.
When India refused to play, there it was not meant to imply that we expected ordinary Pakistanis, members of the civil society, to come out toting guns to kill our players. On the contrary these people, most probably, would have welcomed the Indians with traditional hospitality ... but when was the last time that the civil society in Pakistan has actually got to call the shots and set the tone of the national events? The undeniable fact is that their country is in a state of chaos with they themselves not very sure about who has the reins of the nation in hand.
The sad and stark truth is that until such a time that political stabilty returns to Pakistan and the tide of terrorism is reversed, it will remain an unpredictable country, travel to which will remain a risk fraught activity. Now can our English media get this simple fact?
.Sorry , Pakistan has created this mess. Terrorism is creation of Pakistan army.Pakistan Media, Army and Leaders Spread Hate . They trained Terrorist against India and now the Terrorists wants the control of the world. Eradicate the hate and make peace with your neighbours
.One must remember it is only 30 miles from Amritsar to Lahore.Your people came from the villages attached to the border. We did gallantly and protected Sri Lankans from Indian murderes.Just because there were no Israelis the world will not sympathise with innocent people of Pakistan instead they are putting the blame squarely on us which is like rubbing salt to the wounds.Tell me why your country is so hell ebnt in destroying us. These people like one commentor viren naik are very dangerous do not listen or give platform to them.
Mr.Tahir and Mr. Bomwala it is clear that you Pakistanis still prefer to live in a fool's paradise. The Pakistani terrorists are trained religious fanatics, entirely misled and misinformed to spread hatred. The terrorists created by the Pakistan's Army-backed ISI are just like Frankensteins who were prepared to destroy India, but are now threats to the whole humanity, including common Pakistanis.

You guys live in the world of Fantasies , only crazy about SEX and nothing , Always Dreaming about ZANNAT where the Virgin are waiting for you guys to have sex and Pleasure ....
.It has been a long debated issue whether Pakistan is fit for foreign countries to travel there and play matches, but what transpired on Tuesday says it all. Pakistan is not at all safe, especially for foreign nationals. This cowardice and shameful act on the part ot the terrorists could be termed as the saddest episode in the history of cricket. Touring Pakistan has always been questioned due to the situation prevailing there over the last decade or so, but this attack has confirmed the belief that Pakistan is a dangerous place to tour.
.the worst fellows in the world are pakisthan people. its a no.1 terrorist country in the world. first ban the country thn the world will leave peace. they are not for one dad
.yeh ek bahut hi sharm-naak hadsa hai, pakistan ke awam or puri duniya ke liye, yeh sirf pakistani rajniti ka nateeja hai, kyon ki hindustan par jo atankwadi hamla mumbai main hua tha, jis ke liye pakistan ka haath kaha ja raha hai, toh pakistan ko ab kisi bhi halat main duniya ka dhayen mumbai hamle se hata kar kahin or karna hai, or is rajniti ka shiakr hue beqasoor shrilankan players, jin ka koi kasoor nahi tha, yeh kesa Jeehad hai..?? yeh kun log hain , jo jeehad ke naam par atankwad ko rajnitik roop main dhaal chuke hain ?? yeh kun log hain jo rajneeti ki apni rotiyon ko sek rahe hain or us main insaan ke khon ki chatni laga kar kha rahe hain, pakistan ka haal ab afghanistan jesa hone main bahut zaydah waqt nahi reh gaya hai, kyon ki ASIF ALI ZARDARI sahab ke bass ka nahi hai, ki kisi desh ki kamaan ko sambhal payen...
.This may sound harsh but it is nearly the truth. The body language and the running of the terrorist shows that this is a well drilled unit but at the same time they seemed to have all the time in the world to pick and choose whom they want to hit.The time is right Gordon Browns visit to US and Pakistanis want a sure passage through the Houses to get the assistance bill through. It is all stage managed to draw the sympathy and the first words of the police commissioner were it was all similar to Mumbai ..by putting together the two the ISI has removed itself from the scene scot free and the sympathies should now be equally shared with Mumbai showing Pakistan as the victim of terror too.
One has now got to read between the lines and see why it was stage managed to coincide with the events and why the Sri Lankans and the two empires. All foreigners!.
The Judges march , The Sheriff brothers and the Governors rule,The US bailout ,and the pressure from India.
Let us see who do they catch and are they the real Mccoys?.
I am afraid my initial view is that Pakistan has bungled very badly and it will be very difficult to cover up. I prey that I may be wrong but very rarely i have been proved so. We must remain vigilant by all means.
.I wish a speedy recovery to the injured Sri Lankan players and wish these notorious terrosist activities are stopped by Pakistan. This should be an eye opener for the world and the 2011 Cricket World Cup should not be hosted by Pakistan.
.Such a quick and balanced pinion piece could have come from ur desk only. Nice write up as usual.
I cmpltly agree with u that India's decision of not sending our cricketeres to Pakistan was correct but how far will the decison of no cultural exchange will help us (India and Pakistan) in combating terrorism. Pakistan, for now, is in a much more pitiful situation. I pitty Pak nationals, who are getting sandwiched between Pak gov, ISI, LeT and India. Hope they soon find the right to break through shackles of opression
Arshi thanks and no one really blames the people of Pakistan. What good does pity do? Politics is about objective analysis and protecting the interests of one's nation and citizens. We must secure our nation and borders.Having a few cultural exchanges with Pakistan will not solve Pakistan's problems and only expose our players to dangers.
Thank you Prady for your opinionstoo.
Why are you mixing India with Pak Gov, ISI, LeT... sounds ridiculous. Nothing much will happen with Cultural exchanges or Cricket matches. It is the Political Strength & Political will that matters, both of which is Lacking in Pakistan. Cultural exchanges are more of a fel Good Factors than to set right the fundamentals. Let them clean up their home. article is a very neat presentation of facts. appreciate it.
