Aurangabad elephants to be relocated to Chhattisgarh

WILDLIFE CONSERVATOR Anilkumar Sahu of Kanan Pendari Tiger reserve in Chattisgarh, after confirming the physical fitness of two elephants, Lakshmi and Saraswati in Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) run Siddartha Zoo has decided to shift them to a tiger reserve in Chhattisgarh, in a month’s span. As reported earlier, the Kanan Pendari Zoo campus also known as Wild Animal Preservation Home Park got information about availability of two elephants in Siddartha Zoo, following which he communicated this demand to the Zoo officials. Sahu was in need of four elephants for the Tiger reserve, of which the two will be from Aurangabad and the other two will be relocated from the Jijamata Park of Byculla, Mumbai. After Aurangabad, Sahu went to Mumbai to conduct similar checks on the two female elephants in Jijamata Park. The elephants will be used for Elephant safari for tourists in the Tiger reserve, he added. The decision to relocate about 140 Elephants from 14 major zoos in India, including 2 from Aurangabad is followed by the Central Zoo Authority of India (CZA) directives issued on November 2009. The Chief Forest Conservator, Nagpur, will provide transportation expenses and other facilities to transfer Saraswati and Lakshmi to Chhattisgarh, Dr. Naikwade stated. The female elephant Saraswati was brought to Aurangabad from Mysore zoo in August 1996. After about a year in November 1997 she gave birth to Lakshmi in Siddartha Zoo. Meanwhile, the decision to shift elephants has disappointed Siddartha Zoo employees. Dr. Naikwade said the decision has disappointed all of them. About 4-5 thousand people visit the Siddartha Zoo on weekends just to see these elephants. Their absence will affect this figure and ultimately the revenue generated, he added.
